work to show off at exhibition - 2nd piece

My second piece is taken from the module 3D modelling taken in my second year. This piece is titled "Precious".

Response from Craig Barker (leader of Graphics team)

Craig had responded to my message by saying that he will have a logo ready hopefully for Thursday 25th of February. This will mean that we should have our exhibition advertised on the Anglia Ruskin website by the beginning of March.

Exhibition advert in the Anglia Ruskin Website

After establishing communication with Andrea Hilliard (Corporate Communications Manager); we have now secured a space in the Anglia Ruskin website under news and events. This will go live once the graphics team have created the exhibition logo.

Below is an exert from our last communication together via email:

"Hi Savva

It sounds good. Please could you supply some copy (and an image?) for the events section and I’ll ensure that it gets added.

Kind regards, Andrea"

Tasks to be completed for the website advert:

  • A finalised logo for the web advert
  • A definative event date and time (have to consider that we only have the shop for one week and are unsure of the installation time)
  • A website (our website address can be placed on the advert at a later date)
  • A blurb describing the exhibition
  • A design to accompany all the entities above

Agender of discussion for next week

The topics that we have to talk, examine and decide are:

  • Rough costings for the exhibition
  • If we need money; how we can organise a fund raiser.
  • To get a rough timetable sorted for the rota on exhibition week
  • To confirm that we can use thrown out paper at the unversity for the exhibit as there maybe a problem with confidential waste.
  • To decide on who we want to invite and start thinking about invititation designs.
  • To talk about how the public can interact with the exhibition i.e. drawing on whiteboards etc

Movement of materials

Some of the students have cars and have agreed that they can help with moving the larger props over to High Chelmer when necessary.

Timetable for exhibition

To tackle the issue of who will attend the exhibition after the open day; we will bring in a time table next week so that we may mark out a draft rota. Ideally we would like there to be two shifts a day with at least two people in the exhibit at one time

Chosen Concept - delegated tasks

The chosen concept is now "Design Studio". As the team leader for the exhibition group I had delegated tasks to everyone to be completed for next week, these are as follows:

John
-To research companies that can offer large props such as giant pencils and crayons and to try and establish one as a sponsor to hopefully get the props for free. To rumage through his home to see what he can contribute to the exhibition. And to enquire about pricing of vinyls and to see if minimal use of multiple colours will effect pricing so that we may instruct the Graphics group to produce alternative single or two colour logos. To think about who we would want to invite and bring in 3 images of work he would like to exhibit. To also bring in sketches that enabled the final creation of his chosen pieces. (this is to ses if we can use these as backgrounds to the work they evolved from)

Teresa
-To see if we can use university partition walls to help break up the exhibition. To rumage through her home to see what he can contribute to the exhibition. To think about who we would want to invite and bring in 3 images of work he would like to exhibit. To also bring in sketches that enabled the final creation of her chosen pieces . (this is to ses if we can use these as backgrounds to the work they evolved from)

Tom
-To see if we can get sponsored by Tesco so that they may be able to cover the catering. To rumage through his home to see what he can contribute to the exhibition. To see if he can get hold of a polaroid camera as an alternative to just printing pictures of one another. To think about who we would want to invite and bring in 3 images of work he would like to exhibit. To also bring in sketches that enabled the final creation of his chosen pieces . (this is to see if we can use these as backgrounds to the work they evolved from)

Martin
-To see if we can get sponsored by Tesco so that they may be able to cover the catering. To rumage through his home to see what he can contribute to the exhibition. To think about who we would want to invite and bring in 3 images of work he would like to exhibit. To also bring in sketches that enabled the final creation of his chosen pieces . (this is to see if we can use these as backgrounds to the work they evolved from)

Damien
-To enquire about our limitations of the exhibition (health and safety) i.e. do large props needto be barriered away from the public. To also enquire about wireless equipment so that we may keep DVD players seperate to the T.Vs to allow flexibility of the positions of the screens. To think about who we would want to invite and bring in 3 images of work he would like to exhibit. To also bring in sketches that enabled the final creation of his chosen pieces . (this is to see if we can use these as backgrounds to the work they evolved from)

Dan
-To establish communication with radio stations to se if we can get advertised.

Sav
-To establish communication with the university marketing department to see if we can get advertised on the Anglia Ruskin website and the signage screens dotted around campus.

C.V Layout idea 2

My second idea came from using the block colours in my business card. To keep a constant them I designed a colour swatch style C.V, design is as follows:

The swatches would be made out of the same material as my business card. Small eyelets would be used to fasten them together and to allow them to revolve. The advantages of this is that I can put as much or as little information to the c.v. This is because we justify how long or short a c.v is by how much space it takes up on A4 paper

Business card material

When looking into different materials I realised that using my business card design the material should not stand out itself but to help reinforce the cards aura and message. As a result I have chosen to use a matt laminate paper much like double sided matt photo paper. To give extra stability to the card i have chosen to use a paper weight of 350 g/m2. I will be testing my card by printing 10 and then depending on the results I will adjust the specifications accordingly.

"Behind closed doors" design

The following are pictures of what the shell of the "behind closed door" theme could look like:

The following video is a quick walkthrough of the exhibition:

The whole exhibition would benefit from being completely white. The ad hoc walls can provide multiple segregated sections. These segregated sections could provide the following:

Exhibited work
Sit down section
Refreshment station

With the benefit of laminate flooring, no soft furnishings and the use of footstep sounds and occasional coughing from different parts of the exhibition (coming from several small hidden sound systems) should hopefully create an illusion that the exhibition is larger and more populated then it actually is.

Work would benefit from being mounted on black foam board against the crisp white walls. This is relatively inexpensive but would hopefully make the work effectively stand out.

Work to show off

During the course of our last two years at university; everyone has completed the same modules however everyone's work is very different. Because of this I believe that people should be able to show off the work they want as long as it is shown in a similar style according to what ever theme is chosen i.e. whether it is framed, extruded from the wall.

Elaine

Today Elaine had emailed me an idea for a logo in regards to the "behind Closed Doors" theme:

My Response to Elaine was:

Hi Elaine,

Thank you very much for your email, I particularly like the logo titled "closed door2. The font you used is very nice. Could you please think of how you would like it to be displayed. e.g. would you like it to be printed on a banner, or made into a 3.d object or even displayed on the floor of the entrance?

Business card idea

My idea for a business card is of course to attract the persons attention by being different. As our lecturer had cleverly pointed out a business should not be too big as the person should be able to put it in their wallet to keep it safe. I took this advise and tried to do the opposite. My idea is to make the business card smaller and to try and use both sides. My idea is as follows:
On one side of the business card to have a vibrant block colour with a famous design quote using a font called "messy". And on the reverse of the card i would have my details:

Name
What i can do
website
email address

I do not want to use a logo for the reason that i dont want people to recognise me because of the logo, i want people to recognise my name. Although i do understand that a logo is one of the most important aspects of brand identity, i believe that it should only be used for a company not a single person.I have done some printing and found the following card size to be not only attention grabbing but big enough to have all the information i want without looking cramped. I will have betwen 20-50 different cards which will have diferent colours and quotes. My designs are as follows:

The reverse of the card will look as so:

Frieze Art Fair

The Frieze Art fair housed many different artists. This exhibiton was crucial to our research, different artists meant each stand was in itself individual. The first thing i noticed in the art fair was the 3.d sign at the entrance:

It had never dawned on me that having a 3.d sign rather then just a baner was so effective. When first seeing this large piece at the enrance of the fair, i fealt a sense of reasurance that i was not to be disapointed inside. The fact they had thought not just want was to be in the exhibition but outside as well. This 3.d style entrance piece could be used in our closed door exhibition.

In the exhibition itself i had noticed these ad hoc extrusions from the main wall. There was no pattern involved in the placement of these extrusions, however they had a powerful place in their existence. The extrusions segregated artwork from either side almost giving the viewer a private screening of the artwork itself. This idea of adhoc extrusions could work well in the behind closed doors concept to be used to construct a some what maze.

In regards to the signage in and around the exhibition, I was some what surprised to see that the signs were very plain. After time though it had dawned on me that the signs play a crucial role in instrucing people how to navigate around the fair and so any "Arty" signs may be heard to read or follow. This is defiinately something to take away to use on our exhibition.

The pictures above show a man walking through a very small door. Even though there was a larger door on the left people still chose to go through the smaller door. It had no place, no meaning however it engaged with the viewers more them some of the actual artwork itself. This concept gave me an idea that in the behind closed doors theme; we could have different size doors even different shapes.

The two pictures above show how space is not a problem. The exhibition you see in the pictures is only two feet long and 1 foot wide, yet it is so perfectly constructed that when you engage with it by going closer the scale is perfect. It really shows that size (if used properly) can work with you if you dont have enough of it.

work delegation - 04 February 2010

As team leader I had delegated work to the team, delegation is as follows:

Kiel: To create and present ideas of different logos for the "Apocolyptic" theme. (I chose Kiel to work on this as he is very artistic, creative minded and works without boundaries)

Elaine: To also create and present ideas of different logos for the "Apocolyptic" theme and contemplate different colour schemes for the exhibition. (I chose Elaine to also work on a logo as her frame of mind and creative skills are different to that of Kiels and so will hopefully produce a totally different logo/s, this allows the group to choose from a wider range. Elaine is also very good at colaborating colours which is why she is in charge presenting ideas for colour scheme.)

Theresa: To develop upon the "Apocolyptic" theme in terms of different realistic concepts in case anything cannot be done for what ever reason (health and safety, design flaws etc). (I delegated this task to Theresa as she is very down to earth and realistic with ideas. The "Apocolyptic" theme is very creative but can be deemed as unachievable because of the concepts involved which is why I am confident that Theresa's ideas will be achievable.)

Craig: To design and present flyers for the "Apocolyptic" theme. (I chose Craig for this task as he has strength in layout design and also works without boundaries.)

Savva: To investigate further on the "behind closed doors" theme (The "behind closed door" theme presented itself as very popular to the group and lecturer however it has not be developed on yet). To include 3.d layouts of what is achievable using pictures taken by Theresa. We would not know the size of the shops until confirmed in April so the theme must be presented in different sizes to accomodate different spaces.

___________________________________________________________________

We have not decided to visit an exhibition together as we live very unappointmented lives. This can prove to be an advantage as if we visit different exhibitions then we are able to contribute a wider range of inspirations.

For this week I will be visiting the Design Museum in south east London. I am particularly interested in Dieter Rams exhibit. Dieter Rams is an industrial designer and is very clean and sharp with both his designs and exhibits so should prove valuable to the groups chosen theme.

Towers; rough design

Please click on image to view in full

The extrusions on the towers would house the students work, three sides for images and one side for short biography. Work exhibited will be at eye level to allow effective engagement between the viewer and work shown.

Exhibition inspiration and ideas - Towers

Before idea creation can start, one must draw upon inspiration.  In this case i have researched various pre existing exhibitions in which inspired me:

OXFAM Tsunami exhibition

The combination of height, symmetry and use of outside space proves very effective.  Images are displayed at eye level and shown by themselves allowing the viewer to effectively engage in the message it is portraying.  This theme of towers can be implemented in our own exhibition.  Each student could have one tower each (size is dependant on exhibition space) to show off three pieces of work alowing the last side of the tower for a small biography of the student.  Because the towers seperate each student; this allows them to show off any work they want diminishing the viewers boredom of seeing similar images.  The name of the exhibition could be called "Towers".

Advantages:

  • Individual work:  the towers allow students to choose the work they want
  • Consistency
  • Less is more
  • quick setup time
  • The use of lights within the tower will allow work to stand out
Disadvantages

  • Cost: (would have to look into recycled/reused materials)
  • Could be considered as boring/un-engaging (may have to apply designs onto towers)
